Volunteer Work with Kids and More!

  Palestine
    Bethlehem

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months, 7-12 months and 1-2 years
Dates: Open dates

Description: Since February 2003 Karama has rented a house in Deheishe in which activities and projects for children and adolescents are offered seven days a week. Here are some examples:

* Creative workshops
* Education and leadership program for Karama children
* The right to play
* Computer
* Assistance lesson for students of the University
* Wall-Painting project
* Dabka workshop
* Theater workshop
* Exhibition Project
* Chess Club
* Excursions
* Exchange Projects
* Karama children live on SH-TV

Highlights: Children are representing 65% of the overall population of Deheishe refugee camp. The educational process is uncomfortable and incomplete (low level of education, more than 45 students in one classroom, not enough classrooms, insufficient teaching aids). Moreover, the parents cannot supply necessary needs for children. As a result, children are forced to work in order to compensate for the shortage of funds.
There is a severe lack of playgrounds or youth services to accommodate these thousands of children. The only available area for them are the streets, which are dangerous due to passing traffic and to soldiers who shoot bullets and tear gas on a daily basis. That may lead them to vagrancy or violence. Thus, they are in a strong need for a place where they can reaffirm their childhood and participate in activities that stimulate their talents and creativity.

Make Change!

Qualifications: Volunteers from all over the world are most welcome and needed to work with us at Karama.

Come to Deheishe and help us to draw a smile on the children's faces!

Volunteers from different countries have already joined us and worked with Karama in the past months. You can for instance help by giving English lessons, sharing your computer skills and musical or artistic talents, giving lectures about democracy or human rights issues or the like.

We also need volunteers for administrative tasks. You are welcome to stay for both short and long periods.

And there is much more you can help with. Please contact us for more information.

Karama Organization for Women and Children Development's Mission Statement: KARAMA was established in 2002 as non-governmental organization non-governmental organization situated in Deheishe Refugee Camp near the West Bank city of Bethlehem. Since the outbreak of the second Intifada in September 2000 the inhabitants of the camp are - just like their compatriots in other refugee camps in the greater region - surrounded by an environment of violence and hatred, devastation and poverty as well as fear and despair. In these adverse circumstances Karama's center in Deheisha Refugee Camp could well be considered an oasis which provides a safe place for women, children and adolescents offering them different activities and supporting them in many fields.

Year Founded: 2002
