Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Description:
Help educate impoverished communities and prevent the spread of HIV when you volunteer with our AIDS Prevention Program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio de Janeiro has been hit hard by the world AIDS epidemic. In fact, Brazil is the epicenter of the disease in South America; the country accounts for nearly 60 percent of all HIV/AIDS cases in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our AIDS Prevention Program was designed to increase education and provide information about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases to economically depressed areas of the city. These neighborhoods tend to suffer from a lack of knowledge concerning AIDS and other illnesses, and our project works to bridge this information gap. The program offers assistance to both men and women of all ages in these struggling communities. Volunteers work in various favelas (shantytowns) throughout Rio. You will visit schools, community centers, recreational areas, cultural centers, and libraries. As a volunteer, you will be in direct contact with residents of favelas--leading educational classes and lectures, creating and distributing informative posters, and handing out condoms and other contraceptives.

Volunteer Adventures's Mission Statement: The mission of Volunteer Adventures is to create and promote volunteer opportunities that improve the lives of others and the environment in which we live. We seek to achieve this goal by connecting worthy local projects with volunteers around the world.
Many local organizations are doing great work in their communities, but don't have the resources required to recruit international volunteers. Volunteer Adventures serves as the link between these organizations and the volunteers needed to make these projects a success.
All volunteer programs depend on the skilled coordination of a variety of elements: enthusiastic volunteers, meaningful work, organized projects, and supportive staff. It is our goal at Volunteer Adventures to orchestrate this process for you. We use our global experience and resources to provide volunteer experiences that bring pride and satisfaction to everyone involved.
