Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks

Description: Teaching in Fiji as a Projects Abroad volunteer will give you a unique new perspective on this island nation. You can gain invaluable teaching work experience without any previous qualifications, and you are not required to have undergone TEFL training.

Whether you are coming to volunteering during your gap year, career break or an extended holiday, you will have a role to play in one of the schools that we work with, and you will be able to make a real difference.

* Teach English Language in schools with Projects Abroad

Projects Abroad is based in Fiji's 3rd largest town of Nadi on the main island of Viti Levu. We work in primary schools in Nadi and in some surrounding smaller towns and villages. Education is not compulsory in Fiji, however 99% of Fijian children attend primary school which is free for the first 8 years.

Fiji is becoming increasingly urbanised and speaking good English is essential for getting a good job, both in the booming tourist industry and in other areas of business.

English is one of Fiji's official languages, but most local children speak Fijian or the Fijian Hindi language at home.

Volunteer teachers usually start by working alongside the local Fijian staff to help improve conversational English. Through assisting with English lessons and introducing fun and interactive ways of learning, like games and songs you can improve the student's enthusiasm and develop their confidence. They are sure to be interested in you and your life, and you can take advantage of this to get them talking about a wide variety of topics.

Volunteers who are happy to also teach some sports, particularly rugby or football will be in demand and if you have any other interests or subjects you would like to teach such as maths, art, music or drama, we can match you to a school where you can incorporate these skills.

Highlights: Working as a teaching volunteer in Fiji, you will make an important contribution by improving students' spoken English and giving them the confidence that comes from being able to communicate more easily. You will also help to increase cultural awareness and exchange, as the children learn about your culture and customs as you participate in theirs.

The impact that volunteer teachers can make on the lives of their students can last a life-time, but you will also be part of a much larger Projects Abroad volunteer network, which is making a continuous contribution to the wider community.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.

    Year Founded: 1992
