Description:
Education: The schools target vulnerable children, getting them off the street and giving them the opportunity to prepare for a better and happier future. Tuition is based on the abilities of each student. Volunteers will be able to create lesson plans and tech all subjects including math, English, science, history, and general hygiene. Volunteers with a teaching background will be asked to train local volunteer teachers on creating lesson plans, classroom management, and evaluation techniques. Water and Sanitation: The water and sanitation team consists of local volunteers who take action to clean up and improve their community. The team clears drains, and sprays dump sites, toilets and bathrooms to control mosquitoes and prevent the spread of disease. Surface water wells are dug to provide free water to those who cannot afford to pay for it. To enhance prevention of disease and waste, outreach programs are carried out to inform and educate local residents on issues of proper hygiene. Peace and Reconciliation Department aims to transform the feelings of aggression and revenge created by atrocities committed during the war in order to create understanding and peace among fellow Liberians ensuring a better future for the new Liberia. Currently the department attempts to reach this goal through a peace education program in schools, peace and reconciliation workshops, and a community outreach program that includes a drama club, public peace forums, and one-on-one consultations. Volunteer will have the opportunity to teach peace education within the schools, facilitate peace and reconciliation workshops, and assist with community peace forums and the peace drama club. Volunteers are also encouraged to develop new peace projects and to work towards strengthening existing projects. HIV/AIDS: In this community outreach project, local volunteers educate residents of the entire camp on awareness, transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Each day outreach teams speak informally to small groups of residents, who in turn inform their neighbors. This project includes conversation, condom distribution, and education on the proper and consistent use of condoms, with interaction among residents strongly encouraged throughout.
