Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: any date

Description: Learn to surf, then teach less privileged children to surf:

Surf Outreach Project Muizenberg:
The programme Runs daily: Monday - Friday from +-10am - 5pm daily.
Learn to surf free of charge and then make a difference to less privileged childrens lives by teaching Them to surf (and skating inbetween surfing).

- Our surf Project aims to changing as many childrens lives as we possible can.
- Project has been running for 1 year now and we have already changed many childrens lives.
- Our aim is to get the children off the streets and away from begging and instead give them something constructive to do with their time.

Mandy the Director says: We have started this project to add back to Our Community in South Africa, too many people are suffering with no food and places to live, so we thought is was time we did something to change to sad sufferings, We aim to get the childrens lives focused on going to school and eating healthily, we also aim to create a stable foundation in the childrens lives and make them happier. I was tired of seeing all the street children taking bad substances to try and make themselves happy so I decided I had to do something about it. All the children we teach have changed so much since we started the Project, they are happier and healthier. This is the most rewarding feeling for myself and all the Volunteers helping at the Project.

- We also offer feeding schemes where we feed the children when they attend a lesson, Fitness programmes, healthy eating and teaching the children manners.
- Private counselling is done when children need someone to about their problems at home--the counselling is done by Mandy (The Owner) and our other Co-ordinators.
- We currently teach 50+ children per week
- We have also made 4 of our boys leaders, they are now off substances and they pray with the other children.
- The children are also taken to church on Sundays. They go to Hillsong Cape Town Church (Thanks to Hillsong for sponsoring us buses to get the children to church)

The Children
- The Children are less privileged and can hardly afford a meal or bus ticket and to whom a surfboard or wetsuit seems so far out of reach
- This project feeds them and gives them the opportunity to learn the value of the things that are free in life, like sunshine and the ocean and allows them to enjoy life like every child should.
- Lorenzo Anthony who is an employee at the children's school says,"The children REALLy enjoy the surfing and for them to have the opportunity to learn to surf for free is amazing, they thought they would never have the opportunity to Surf- so this is a real privilege for our Students at Capricorn Primary"

The Volunteers
Their duration of stay is from 2 weeks - 1 year, we do prefer it when volunteers stay for a long period of time (so the children have the same teachers for longer)

Child Care Project

The Project runs five days a week from Monday to Friday, 9am-3pm

Overview

The Child Care Project involves working with children from a centre called Rainbow Educare centre. It is an orphanage which was started with 15 children in 1998 out of a desperate need for parenting and caring as many children were left alone to care for themselves and had no one to look after them. The Centre started in a small room in an old squatter area in Vrygrond near Cape Town. With a lot of planning, acceptance and contribution from the community, the educare centre is now operating from much bigger and suitable premises.

The Rainbow Educare centre is now operating in the hands of 3 staff members and two assistants. It is now a fully registered educare centre operating and catering for 65 children (sometimes the numbers get higher than that) from the ages of 1 to 6 years old. The educare centre receives a subsidy from the Department but only for 25 children.

The Rainbow Educare Centre is run by very capable staff, thus as a volunteer you will not come to South Africa to carry all the load of caring for the children. The aim at the centre is to ensure that children grow up with stable and positive foundations. That they too will grow up to be strong and responsible citizens of our country.

Location
The educare centre is located in Vrygrond which is approximately 20min walk from lodge where the volunteers will be staying. Muizenberg is only a 20-minute drive away from Cape Town and is a very well known and sought-after holiday destinations, located on the eastern shore of False Bay.

The Children
The children come from very disadvantaged backgrounds; some are orphaned while others are HIV positive. These children will give anything to have someone look after them to give them love, hope and support for the future.

The Volunteers
The volunteers duration of stay is from 2 weeks 6 months, we do prefer it when volunteers stay for a long period of time (so the children have the same teachers for longer)
