Volunteer with Street Children and Tribal Communities in India

  India
    Rural Areas

Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Please visit the GVI website for upcoming start dates.

Description: Join this short term volunteer project for 2 weeks and work as a teaching assistant on much needed educational projects in tribal communities in Rajasthan, India. You will work alongside other long term GVI volunteers in formal and non-formal schools. All the schools are over-crowded and under funded and as a volunteer you will make the class size more manageable and provide valuable assistance on these worthwhile educational projects. The project usually involves teaching tribal children at formal schools in rural areas in the morning, or teaching street children at informal schools in the evening. Included in the program you will receive basic Hindi lessons during the first week and a cultural workshop (which could be yoga, cookery or dance) in the second week. Some local trips are included, including a visit to the Monsoon Palace and a trip to the Taj Mahal. Other optional side trips are available for those that wish to explore more of Rajasthan.

* How this program makes a difference:

The isolated tribal communities in India face many challenges; the socio-economic progress being witnessed in other parts of India has not yet reached these areas and consequently the cycle of poverty continues. They also face illiteracy and a general lack of education. Child labor and child marriages are common and contribute to these low rates of education. This project aims to increase the education of future generations as a positive step forward in achieving sustainable community development.
