Women Empowerment and Elimination of FMG

  Kenya
    Nanyuki

Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months, 7-12 months, 1-2 years and over 2 years
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: All year round

Description:

Volunteers work in a rescue centre which accommodates women and girls rescued from forced marriages and those rescued from forced Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practices within the communities among the Maasai, Turkana, Samburu, to mention but a few.

Volunteers teach girls the importance of being a woman in a society where they are highly undervalued. Women and girls are also taught hygiene, nutrition, small business skills, etc.

Volunteer for any duration and stay as long as you wish. You can arrive at any time during the month and the volunteer work starts the following day after orientation.

You will typically work between 9am - 4pm, Monday to Friday. You will spend your spare time shopping, eating out, cinemas, chatting with other volunteers or swimming. You can also go scuba-diving and surfing if at the coast, skate on the ice-skating facility at the Panari Hotel, Bowling at the Village Market or simply take a day out to giraffe centre, Animal orphanage, National Museum, Aboretum forest park, the Mamba Village and or the ostrich farm in Nairobi.

Kenya Youth Hostels Volunteers program is open to all. We invite individuals, couples, families, students, researchers, and groups (churches, colleges, and student associations).

Our programs are flexible and volunteers can arrive and depart on any day all year round.

Women Empowerment and Elimination of FMG

Highlights:

The women at the rescue centers are smart and passionate. They are ready to educate their children, nurture their families and change their communities by engaging in small business projects, getting educated, etc. Their passion and dedication will impress you. You will also be encouraged by their stories. E.g. help in enhancing the status of some tribes like Masai people and the Masai tribe in Kenyan society.

When you volunteer, the supervisor at your volunteer work station will allow you to submit their name as a reference when applying for jobs. When completing employment applications, it makes a positive impression to the interviewer when the application shows the potential employee was a youth volunteer. You get a certificate at the end of the program.

Kenya Youth Hostels Association's Mission Statement: Kenya Youth Hostel Association is a non-profit organization, which promotes youth hostelling in Kenya and gives the opportunity to Kenyan young people to travel abroad, because the membership card of international hostelling is valid worldwide. So if you have this card, you are accepted in all of those seventy countries and all of those youth hostels without any differences. We would like to see more Kenyan people travel around and use the infrastructure, because all countries are very well covered by youth hostels. Our main task is to promote youth traveling as something which is not only for people who have a lot of money. We are here to help people to travel more easily, quickly, safely and to find people of their age around. We are promoting traveling with no differences between races, nationalities, without any kind of discrimination.
