Spend a Semester in Rome while Studying and Volunteering!

  Italy
  • Rome:
  • Roma (Rome)

Term: Fall, Spring
Durations of Program: 3-6 months, 7-12 months, 1-2 years and over 2 years
Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months

Description: Rome Semester - spend a full semester or even a year at St. John's University's campus in Rome, Italy - a premier academic institution in the heart of the Eternal City! While there, you'll conduct an in-depth exploration of Italian history, language and culture, using the distinctive academic resources of this remarkable city.

Academics:
Dynamic and interactive academics are at the core of our program, engaging various liberal arts-based disciplines for insight into politics, art, history and economics. Through our campus in Rome, Italy, you'll also benefit from small classes taught by St. John's outstanding international faculty.

* Make Rome your classroom - practice for Italian classes while chatting with locals in the markets, cafes and churches. Explore the masterpieces of Bernini in the Piazza Navona. Marvel at baroque architecture and frescos of St. Peter's while attending Sunday mass.

* For students with advanced Italian language skills, there are internship opportunities that offer exposure to actual office and work situations in Italy.

* Each semester includes an academic five-day tour of cities like Strasbourg, France and Brussels, Belgium - government center of today's European Union. You'll have access to dignitaries, councils and commissions and leave with valuable insight into today's dynamic European political scene.

Accommodations:
To enhance your immersion in Roman life and culture, you will stay with other students at our newly renovated Collegio Leoniano residence facility, located in the same building as our classrooms.

The Collegio Leoniano is well situated within the city and provides spacious rooms, wireless internet, and laundry facilities.

Social activities are organized throughout the semester, as well as trips to events such as concerts, operas, plays, art exhibits and sporting events.

St. John's offers access to weekly Mass in Italian and English. Of course, students of all faiths will enjoy the many opportunities to integrate their beliefs with their own academic and personal growth.

Highlights: Service-Learning: Make new friends while helping to change lives is an inspiring experience- one that sets us apart from other study abroad programs. Service Learning is a distinctive part of all programs at St. John's, reflecting our Vincentian Catholic heritage and our focus on helping students make the world a better place by serving others.

You'll make a real difference through activities like teaching English to local students, serving food in soup kitchens and mentoring school children. Spending time in volunteer environments, you'll actively engage the people around you. Service activities are scheduled regularly, so you can sign up for as many as you like.

"Studying in three international cities was amazing. Rome is rich with history and the classroom is literally the city. You can walk down the street and actually witness history preserved. Paris is very sophisticated and cosmopolitan. It's very beautiful and relaxed- no wonder Picasso, Chagall, Van Gogh and countless other artists were inspired by the city. And Salamanca is just as pleasing as the other two cities. It's a university city and you can witness how international college students live. A typical day includes going to the Plaza Mayor to get tapas. I definitely got used to this lifestyle."
