AmeriSpan - Volunteer in Kenya

  Kenya
  • Nairobi:
  • Nairobi
  • Mombasa:
  • Mombasa

Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks

Description: Kenya, named for its signature mountain, an East African country is considered the cradle of humanity and simply is Africa in microcosm. From the varied wildlife of the Serengeti to the beautiful white-sand beaches, the energetic cities, the enormous glacial mountains, and the expansive deserts, Kenya truly does encompass the full range of biodiversity that Africa has to offer. In Kenya it is possible to leave Nairobi, an ancient city with a thriving business heart powered by the latest information technology, and drive in just a few hours to a place where life is lived in accordance to tradition and custom, where native tribe, such as the Maasai warriors armed with spears drive cattle into thorn brush enclosures to protect them from lions at night. Kenya's magnificent wildlife parks draw millions of tourists from around the world each year to witness life preserved in its natural habitat.

There are 42 ethnic communities in Kenya, all with their own language, history, culture and customs. The connecting languages spoken and understood by most are Swahili and English.

Volunteer projects are located in Nairobi and Mombasa. Hot and humid, Nairobi is the modern capital city of Kenya also known as the 'Green City in the Sun'. Mombasa is a thriving port town based mainly on trade and with some spectacular beaches nearby. Our volunteer program presently supports local orphanages, HIV/AIDS Projects, local schools and NGOs working for different social issues. For certified health care professionals there are ample opportunities to assist doctors in local hospitals.

Important Note: Recent political turmoil has caused a higher risk to personal safety in this destination. We recommend that you check with the US State Department and other government agencies before choosing this program. This is not a location for people with little or no international travel experience.

AmeriSpan Study Abroad's Mission Statement: Our mantra is "Every Language, Every Culture, Everywhere." AmeriSpan Study Abroad has over 15 years experience and over 30,000 past participants. Our staff has three passions: language, culture, and travel. Individually and as a group, we have accumulated experiences and knowledge related to these passions. AmeriSpan's staff has traveled to more than 65 countries, every continent except Antarctica, speak 10 languages, and we are happy to share this enormous amount of relevant knowledge with you. Every staff member has studied and/or lived abroad for extended periods of time. We are neither a language school nor a travel agent, we're a hybrid of the two: a language travel organization. AmeriSpan has evaluated hundreds of schools, host families and destinations to determine which programs to offer, and our independence allows us to give you unbiased evaluations of these programs. Our pledge to our participants is to make going abroad 'worry-free'. There is no risk in choosing an AmeriSpan program because you'll get the best program, best price and can cancel for any reason and get a full refund on every dollar we have received for your program.
