Prison Advocacy and Education Internship

  Ghana
    Cape Coast

Term: Fall, Spring, Summer, Throughout the year, Winter
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months, 7-12 months, 1-2 years and over 2 years
Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months

Description: We are currently recruiting dynamic, committed individuals for three placements in the area of prisoner and guard advocacy. Placements are aimed towards individuals with a strong educational background in Social Work, Counseling and/or Education, although a combination of life/work/volunteer experience will be considered.

Programs take place at Ankaful Prison, located near Cape Coast, and primarily involve low-key relationship building and informal counseling with both inmates and guards. We try regularly to offer basic literacy and mathematics training to inmates in small groups (3-5 individuals per volunteer), although the consistency of this training depends on the number of volunteers available. Volunteers will also spend about half of their time working on a "human rights manual" that will be used towards future advocacy projects. This manual will be worked on in collaboration with the local CHRAJ (Centre for Human Rights and Justice) office if time and scheduling permits.

Qualifications: Some combination of the following skills are required for Prison Advocacy placements:

* Undergraduate degree in the Social Sciences preferred (although a High School Diploma with commitment to change will also be accepted)
* Some knowledge regarding Restorative Justice and/or prisoner rehabilitation
