Teaching English for Eco Tourism - Esteli and Rural Community
Nicaragua
Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Description:
Do you have an English teaching qualification and/or experience of teaching English? Do you speak some Spanish? Are you going to be in northern Nicaragua for the next 4 months or more? Do you believe that volunteering is great way to share ideas and learn more about a community? Two English classes, in the city of Esteli and in the community of El Regadio are looking for a teacher. Both are motivated to learn and are already receiving some lessons. You would spend half your time living in a rural community, and half in Esteli. These classes have grown out of a project of English for Eco Tourism that originated in the Miraflor Nature Reserve. The Nest Trust has developed resources and guides for teachers in rural Nicaragua, and has successfully taught a number of English speaking guides in Miraflor and other parts of Nicaragua. The project is small and flexible and you would be working on your own but the groups are friendly and would love to have you.
Highlights:
I have been working with these groups and others in Northern Nicaragua for 4 months; I came to help out and also find out about the realities of coffee farming and fair trade. I have found out what I wanted to know and much much more; and felt welcome and comfortable here and enjoyed my stay. The place is beautiful, in whatever season, and there is plenty of time to discover other parts of the country: the colonial cities, the nature reserves, the volcanoes, the mountains... I would love for someone else to have the same experience.
Qualifications:
TEFL certificate or 2 years teaching experience
Cost Include Description:
There is no initial cost but you will support yourself to live and have fun while you are volunteering: living in Nicaragua including many excursions, quite a few beers and some Spanish lessons has cost me about $80 a week.
