Blue Duck Lodge Conservation Program
New Zealand
Description:
We run an eco-tourism project primarily protecting and rehabilitating native NZ species such as Blue Ducks and Kiwis (New Zealand's national emblem). We have three lodges on 6000 acres and based in the central north island and surrounded by national parks and virgin bush. Nestled at the bottom of three water catchments and with an hour from snow covered volcanoes, we have unique sub tropical forest with mountain fed rivers. Given the region's geology, climate and remoteness, we also have some of the highest numbers of Kiwi and Blue Duck within NZ, as well as many other endangered birds, bats and fish. Volunteers will be required to assist with: 1. The hunting and trapping of predators/ pests 2. Surveying Blue Ducks via kayak and hiking 3. Surveying kiwi calling at night time via camping 4. Track marking/photographing/hiking 5. General track maintenance, fence building, painting. 6. Help with farm work such as mustering and docking sheep etc. Movement around the farm is done via quad bikes, 4wd, horses and some times helicopter for hunting and beehive movement, so generally we have lots of fun!! We host weddings, parties and corporate groups so some assistance with guiding/hosting may be required. Volunteers are required year round for predator control etc, however summer is extremely busy with Blue Duck and kiwi fledging, as well as track maintenance and farm work.

The station is part working farm and part virgin and re-generating bush. We have a newly renovated house for volunteers.
