Volunteer Teacher of English
China
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Description:
Shanghai Ming Hang Technology Kindergarten is located in the South of Shanghai. Your work will mostly focus around teaching preschool aged children through games, songs, stories and other fun activities. A teacher will usually give you a topic, and then assist you in planning a lesson which fits around it. For example, you may be asked to teach a song, play a game, or teach the children about Christmas in your hometown. You may also be asked help the children during their mealtimes, take them to play outdoors, do arts and crafts activities or get them ready for naps. You'll usually have a Chinese teacher present in the classroom with you. Volunteers will teach 11 to 15 lessons (35 or 40 minutes per lesson) on weekdays and can extend their time at school by taking part in different activities. Weekends are free and time for shorter trips can normally be arranged. You will share your teaching experience with local English teachers at a monthly Discussion Forum in which all volunteers share their teaching method and experience with VIP staff. Though most schools provide teaching materials, any additional materials that you can bring will be welcome. We also encourage volunteers to bring photos of their country, hometown, house, family etc. Students are curious about that kind of information and it is helpful to stimulate conversation.
Highlights:
The mix of language immersion, homestays, and host project placements with local co-workers and international volunteers, makes VIP distinct among international service programs.
Qualifications:
While specialized training is not usually required for VIP, we look for many qualities that make a successful volunteer: maturity, flexibility, common sense, enthusiasm, reliability, and sensitivity.
