Volunteers are needed to teach the following subjects for 1st to 6th grade: English, Math, Natural Science, Physical Education, Creative Arts or Basic Computing. This opportunity is ideal for high school leavers, undergrads as well as graduates and is a great idea for gap year travel. There are numerous such positions to fill. Students in Teacher Training colleges are also welcome to do this charity work as are already-practicing teachers. Teaching in an overseas country can be a very fulfilling experience. Volunteers may offer to teach more than one subject. Volunteering Position Name: Volunteer amateur subject teacher for primary Placement Location: Several towns in southern Ghana, West Africa Minimum duration for this type of voluntary work is one week The primary school structure in Ghana is as follows: PRIMARY 1 (P1) - 6 year olds PRIMARY 2 (P2) - 7 year olds PRIMARY 3 (P3) - 8 year olds PRIMARY 4 (P4) - 9 year olds PRIMARY 5 (P5) - 10 year olds PRIMARY 6 (P6) - 11 year olds (Average class size for Primary is 15) You can volunteer as a subject teacher for two or more of P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 and P6 (You need not be a professional teacher to do this: if you have had some high school education, you should be able to do this - with the help of the preparation material we'll make available to you) Duties: As a subject teacher, you'll teach only one of the listed subjects. However you'll be required to teach whichever subject you choose at two or more levels. For example, you could teach English at P3 and P4
