Tibet
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month
Description:
Full of magic and mystery, Tibet is truly an amazing Buddhist kingdom. Rustic Volunteer Travel 's volunteer and travel in Tibet program offers participants rewarding volunteer abroad opportunities teaching English or working in an orphanage in the city of Lhasa in conjunction with a remarkable travel opportunity, exploring significant places such as Potala Palace, the Barkhor Bazaar, and the Jokhang Palace, and the ever-so-tranquil Nam-tso Lake (just to name a few). Amongst the natural beauty and amidst the bustle of sacred pilgrimages, volunteers in Tibet embark upon an experience markedly unlike any other in the world. Project Available in Tibet: Teaching English/Work in Orphanage Just outside of the cultural capital of Lhasa and near the world-famous Potala place, volunteers/travelers teach English to poor, destitute, and disabled children. Take advantage of an opportunity to contribute to orphaned children who have been abandoned due to the rampant poverty within Tibet as well as explore the nomadic life of rural Tibetans. In Rustic Volunteer Travel's Teaching English in Tibet program, the school staff supports volunteers and helps them to understand the local curricula and teaching methods, and also helps to resolve communication barriers. Volunteers/travelers can benefit by supplying these orphans with much-needed love and companionship as well as a solid foundation to meet their needs and nurture their interests, goals and ultimately make their dreams for a brighter tomorrow become reality.
Highlights:
Orphanage projects are available in Lhasa (traditional capital of Tibet, means "place of the gods",). Lhasa has many sites of historic interest, including the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Sera Monastery, Zhefeng Temple, Drepung Monastery and Norbulingka. However, many important sites were damaged during the Cultural Revolution. Lhasa was also the established residence of the Dali Lama. Volunteers can organize different possible excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: ancient forts, beautifully ornamented monasteries, Chorten (commemorative monuments), striking landscapes, temples, fesitivals, hotels, shopping and much more.
