The rich culture, the freedom struggle and the friendly people make this a fascinating nation to explore. With the sounds of the African drum beat; the bright sun, stars and city streets; the natural beauty of the landscape, South Africa is an inviting location and safe for volunteering projects.

South Africa is an invigorating and multifaceted country. With its post-apartheid struggle still evident, there is a sense of energy and progress in the air. The infrastructure is continuously improving, the weather is pleasant and the wildlife opportunities leave visitors awe-struck. But if you want to understand South Africa, you'll have to deal with the full spectrum; poverty and the AIDS orphan pandemic

Our programs provide the opportunity to participate in the social and academic development of children and young people. By living and working among the people you'll be able to appreciate the complexity of the nation's past and present, and help to give the younger generation the tools they need for the future.

Contribute your time as a teaching assistant in a pre-school and primary school. Work in an orphanage or community children's center. Get involved with the motivation and development of young people's lives and ultimately help to bridge gaps and influence change in the 'New South Africa".

Our programs allow you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, smells and tastes of South Africa.

Highlights: Abroaderview projects are based in the Venda region, the northernmost province in South Africa. It is a region of contrasts, from true bushveld country to majestic mountains, primitive indigenous forests, unspoiled wilderness and patchworks of farmland. This area is home to the Kruger National Park, one of the oldest and largest wildlife preserves in the world. Here you can view the Big Five, an essential part of the South African experience.

Our projects are primarily in the main town of Thohoyandou and its surrounding villages: Manamani, Dzwerani, Shayandima, and Itsane. You will find colorful markets and commercial areas in the town center, while the surrounding areas are lush agriculture centers with banana plantations, acres of fruit farms, tobacco and maize lands. Coffee and tea plantations dot the mountain slopes, and local homes are delightfully decorated with traditional motifs.

Our project is located 4.5 hours north of Johannesburg. You will have 2 days orientation with our Project Director, learning about the programs, local culture, sightseeing tips etc. When the project is finished you will be provided transportation back to the city of Johannesburg. Volunteers must arrive in Johannesburg the 1st or 3rd Friday of each month.

With its pleasant year round climate and close proximity to Kruger National Park, volunteering in the Venda region is a great opportunity to explore real Africa, away from the hussle and bustle of the large metropolitan cities.

* Volunteers must be 17 yrs old. There is no age-limit.
* Volunteers should possess a positive attitude, flexibility and patience.
* Volunteers need to have a sense of adventure and humor

Typical Volunteer: Volunteers accepted from all nationalities, backgrounds, professions and skills. We prefer volunteer 18 yrs and older. Volunteers are those searching for a different sort of vacation, on a career break, a retiree, or a gap year student. We expect volunteers to travel with an open mind, a caring nature and a sense of humor!
