Whale & Dolphin Research in the Ligurian Sea, Italy
Italy
- All Other Areas in Italy:
Tuscania
Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: May to October
Description:
The project investigates the spatial distribution, habitat preferences, ecology and behavior of cetaceans living in the Cetacean Sanctuary - a special marine protected area extending between Italy and France. The research focuses on the spectacularly large fin whale as well as on sperm whales, Risso's dolphins, pilot whales, striped and bottlenose dolphins. It is conducted by means of field techniques including individual photo-identification, remote tracking, acoustics and behavioral sampling. The aim of the project is to provide a scientific basis for the management of the Pelagos Cetacean Sanctuary. Intensive research conducted by the project is highlighting the conservation needs of several cetacean species and has been raising remarkable awareness. Since 1992, almost 2,000 volunteers participated in the research cruises. Living on board and co-operating to different aspects of the research creates a bond between researchers and volunteers, leading to a stronger commitment to environmental conservation. Participants will be directly involved in field activities, helping the researchers to collect cetacean data and assist them in preliminary analyzes of digital photos and acoustic recordings, while learning basics in sailing. Trips to visit the nearby Oceanographic Museum of Monaco are also foreseen. The Ligurian Sea includes deep-water and shelf-slope habitats suitable for the breeding and foraging needs of the entire complement of cetacean species found in the Western Mediterranean Sea. It counts one of the highest concentrations of whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea with as many as eight resident cetacean species. Unfortunately, it is also affected by severe anthropogenic impact, the fauna diversity coexisting with very high levels of human pressure. In order to preserve the exceptional biodiversity of the area, in 2002 the creation of a Cetacean Sanctuary was ratified by Monaco, France and Italy. Although to this day the area has seen little changes in terms of management, the agreement represents an important step forward towards the final goal of ensuring protection to cetaceans living in the area. To provide a scientific basis for management recommendations to the policy makers, the final goal of the Cetacean Sanctuary Research project in the area is to gain a basic understanding of this complex ecosystem. Intense research activities conducted in this region have also been raising remarkable public awareness. The project works in collaboration and within the legal framework of the UNEP's Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area.
