Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: All year round
Description:
As a volunteer you can help in the following departments: * Work side-by-side with the approach team of workers to visit places where street children hang out, reaching them through socio pedagogical means; * Community homes: the children and adolescents who live on the streets are offered the possibility to live in a family environment or foster home; * Complementary activities and access to education, culture, sports and leisure; * Professional initiation for adolescents, facilitating the access to the professional market by technical training.
Highlights:
* being able to see the COMPLETE project: from street-work where the children hang out to community homes, where activities are being done, until the professional initiation of the older children; * be able to be in CLOSE contact with the children by staying INTERN in the project; * get a GOOD FEELING by seeing how happy these children can be.
Qualifications:
Volunteers for this program do not need specific educational skills. However, volunteers should realize that they work with children that live in situation of social risk. That means that not seldom these children have been exposed to violence, drugs and crime and are abandoned by their parents. For this reason these children need extra -psychological- attention and patience. We believe that a volunteer who is motivated, open-minded, respectful and pro-active is worth more than a list of qualifications obtained by education only. Language skills are not obliged, but a basic knowledge of Portuguese helps the volunteer a lot. We work with excellent language courses.
