Honduras
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks and 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: Visit the GVI website for upcoming start dates
Description:
Join GVI on this short-term volunteer construction project in Honduras. Live in the ancient colonial town of Copan Ruinas and work with nearby indigenous communities helping to alleviate poverty by constructing energy-efficient stoves, promoting agriculture and helping to raise livestock. Health problems caused by indoor air pollution from cooking stoves cause more deaths each year than either Malaria or AIDS. The efficient stove you will help to install in homes can add 10-15 years to the life expectancy of the family members inhabiting the house. You can also learn Spanish while you are there, included in the program are 20 hours of lessons, as well as a guided adventure to one of the attractions in the surrounding area. In just a week, you can make all the difference to an indigenous family. How this program makes a difference: Economically these stoves make a huge difference to families as they only have to buy around one third of the firewood they currently do, and spend less on medicines for chronic lung illnesses. They also make a difference environmentally and medically, as the deforestation of trees is essentially reduced by two-thirds per family and no smoke inhalation due to the chimney improves the health of the families greatly.
