Sterilization Program for Dogs and Cats in South India
India
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Description:
We run a small veterinary dispensary in Mamallapuram / South India and we have started a ABC (Animal Birth Control) project for stray dogs and cats. At the moment "we" means a veterinary nurse from the UK and myself, an animal lover from Switzerland who has sponsored the dispensary with the help of some donations from friends. Several vets from nearby Chennai/Madras came for one day to operate on several dogs, but the result has been a disaster each time! Now we are looking for volunteers as follows: 1. One or two people who love animals (preferably with veterinary experience) to look after the house, five dogs and four cats for min. six weeks in summer 2009 starting end of June. Free accommodation with two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom. 2. Veterinary doctors with experience for 3-4 weeks periodically, any time in the year. This would be for the neutering program. We can pay for simple board and lodging.
Highlights:
Mamallapuram is a small town 60 km south of Chennai on the Koromandel Coast in Tamil Nadu. Due to its archaeological importance the temple district of Mamallapuram was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. This makes Mamallapuram one of the most famous tourist attractions of South India. There are many interesting sites in the village itself and its surroundings. Day trips to places like Kanchipuram (centre of silk making), Auroville, Pondicherry, and many more are most common among tourists. A huge and wild beach makes the place even more attractive for good swimmers and sun lovers.
Cost Include Description:
Travel to India is at own cost of volunteers.
Salary / Pay: We provide board and lodging for the vet, free accommodation for the volunteer/s.
Experience Required: yes
Experience in neutering/spaying dogs and cats is required for the vet.
For the volunteer/s who look after the place in summer some experience with animal welfare is preferable - animal love is required though.

Sharana Dispensary's Mission Statement: We are a small private veterinary dispensary in Mamallapuram/South India.
Our main aim is an extended ABC (Animal Birth Control) program for street dogs and cats in Mamallapuram and surroundings. We are supported only by a small swiss association with no more than 30 members at present. This allows us to run the dispensary, but not to pay for a full time veterinary doctor.
