Volunteer as a Teacher in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months, 7-12 months, 1-2 years and over 2 years
Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Description:
Rhem Preparatory School is located in the Eastern part of Freetown Thunder in Sierra Leone. The school has approximately 300 students and is affiliated with the Rhema Church in the Thunder Hill community. The community is set up on one of the most beautiful mountains of Freetown, although its roads are dusty. On the other side of the mountain is the Freetown Sea and the island-like airport. The community has a population of about 6-7 thousand people. From 8am to 2:30pm Monday through Friday, volunteers teach at the school, in coordination with the local teachers. While sometimes volunteers teach in the same class as local teachers, they often plan, teach, assess, and evaluate their classes on their own with very little guidance. Volunteers teach any of the following academy subjects from Nursery 1 to Grade 6: math, science, language arts reading and tutorial program, literature, history, geography, phonics, French, handwriting, computer skills. You are encouraged to give your input and try (or share) new teaching techniques. The children will take some time to get used to each volunteer's unique style, but the results you will see are wonderful. Volunteers with medical background are also encouraged to work in the school clinic.
Qualifications:
We are looking for volunteers who love working with and teaching children and youth, who are motivated to take on challenges, and who are ready to live in a simple environment. While we do not require specific experience, having planned lessons/units/activities, taught elementary or nursery school, or worked for community development is an asset. Qualified teachers can run a teacher training program as well as teach children, and those with medical qualifications can also work at the school's clinic.
Cost in US$: First month $400, subsequent months $100 each

KIDS Worldwide's Mission Statement: Kids Worldwide seeks to improve the quality of life for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
We provide nurturing care and educational programmes based upon the universal concepts of Neo-Humanism, which are tailored to the needs of the children in our projects.
We run orphanages as well as provide services to already established orphanages and childrens' projects (such as struggling primary schools and kindergartens) through our volunteer outreach programs.
Our volunteer programs are notable in that we only request a small donation for food and accommodation that is paid directly to the project itself when the volunteer arrives. There is no administration fee requested to sign up through the program as we have volunteers doing all the web design and co-ordination for free.
We ask that each volunteer give US $350 for their first month's food and accomodation and $100 thereafter. That is all - compare this to other volunteering sites on the internet!
