Description:
The handicrafts project creates employment for hilltribe villagers through the production and sale of upscale products made using local materials and techniques. The products have been adapted for a Western market and villagers are trained as artisans and taught to produce to the highest quality to ensure that they are not competing at the low end of the market. All products meet fair trade regulations. Currently the project works with approximately 40 villagers, mostly women, from the Akha, Karen, Lahu and Hmong ethnic minority groups. Depending on orders and activities, you may be able to participate in cotton dyeing and weaving, silk production (from silkworms) through dyeing, spinning and weaving, embroidery of different types, batik printing, etc.
