Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: All Year Round
Description:
In our Teaching English program, volunteers will assist teachers in schools run by the local government in Olinda. Volunteers will teach conversational English to 7-11 year olds; classes usually contain about 25 children. Volunteers will also help the Brazilian teachers improve their English language skills.
Highlights:
Activities Volunteers will teach conversational English in a classroom environment. This may include singing songs and playing games. Also, it may involve including the Brazilian teacher in these activities, so that he/she can also improve his/her language skills. Working Hours Volunteers will work 5 hours each day, some time between 7 a.m.-6 p.m., from Monday through Friday. Resources The federally-funded schools are reasonably equipped, but not to the extent to which most Westerners are accustomed. Equipment will be basic; a range of English textbooks is available and some magazines and newspapers are relatively easy to access. Photocopying facilities are also available. Special Points The local government in Olinda oversees 40 schools, and Global Crossroad will place 4 volunteers per school--2 volunteers in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.
