Volunteer Vacation in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Cambodia
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: All year round
Description:
Volunteers help orphans by teaching them English, basic use of the computer, arts and craft or music and dance. A basic command of the English language will open up doors of job opportunities for these orphans when they grow a bit older. Since the orphans know very little English and hardly have anyone to practice with, volunteers can help by engaging the kids in English conversations during their interaction. The orphanage also has a computer room and volunteers are welcomed to teach them the basic use of the computer. Another option with the pre-school children is to play with them and provide a helping hand in more general tasks around the orphanage. There are altogether around 70 orphans from the ages of 2 weeks to 18 years old in this Phnom Penh orphanage.
Highlights:
Voluntary work in this Phnom Penh orphanage involves teaching English to the orphans. Volunteers can teach English or basic computer skills in the orphanage's classrooms. The English lessons to be taught will complement the formal school's curriculum. More importantly, the English interaction with the orphans can help them to improve their English, which will be a strong asset when they are to look for job in the future. For the teaching of English, there is no requirement for the volunteers to be native speakers neither is it necessary for them to have academic qualification in the English language. All that is required is a decent command of English and a heart to help the orphans. This program is highly suitable for gap year students, student groups, corporate volunteers and Church groups! Singapore Work Holiday Program: Good news, undergraduates and graduates! Finance your gap year and volunteering in asia through the Singapore Work Holiday Program! Qualifications:
Although no special qualification requirement is needed, it will be great if volunteers speak relatively decent English. Most important of all, a willing heart is more than enough.
