Teaching English in Philippines
Philippines
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: All Year Round
Description:
The children in the Philippines begin learning English in the first grade, so it's not a surprise that most of the population can speak and understand English. However, young Filipinos are benefited tremendously by learning English from a native English speaking volunteer.
Highlights:
We place volunteers in rural elementary schools an hour from Tacloban City to assist local teachers with their English classes and other subjects. These volunteers are able to experience living in a rural village and will observe the true meaning of "community" as defined by the Filipino people. Another alternative to teaching in the rural setting is to assist with informal education classes in Tacloban. These classes assist young people who have dropped out of school and unemployed adults interested in skills training as well as in learning the basic subjects taught in public schools. Our international volunteers can be role models for these struggling teenagers and adults. The informal education sector lacks the teachers needed to conduct regular classes for these students who have dropped out of school and want to continue their education. Our volunteers can organize and schedule classes daily and have a profound effect on these students' lives. Experience in teaching English or TEFL certification is preferred but not mandatory.
