HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Program
Thailand
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Monthly Start Dates
Description:
GSC participants work with local teachers to plan lessons and activities for students ranging from M1 to M6 (7th to 12th grades) to provide students with basic knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention methods. All lessons are conducted in English giving students the opportunity to practice their English skills with a native English speaker and their fellow classmates. Prior to departure, participants are given two manuals to reference during their program. The Teaching English in Thailand and HIV/AIDS Prevention Training manuals are valuable resources for participants to utilize before and during their project. The HIV/AIDS Prevention Training manual provides a technical overview of the virus, its transmission and progression through the body, and prevention measures. The manual also includes sample lesson plans that effectively integrate HIV/AIDS education with English language training, fun games, and activities. Participation in the HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Program can be part of a short-term two to four week stand alone program or as part of the longer term International Health Internship, which includes placement in a local hospital. The International Health Internship presents the opportunity for participants to shadow Thai doctors and nurses and be exposed to the many the facets of hospital operation and unique health care issues of developing nations, as well as provide much needed HIV/AIDS education and prevention training to Thai youth. The GSC HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Program offers an opportunity of a lifetime to be part of a meaningful volunteer program actively serving those in need.
Highlights:
All GSC programs begin with a 6-day orientation and training. The first three days and two nights of the program are spent in Bangkok giving volunteers an opportunity to see some of the amazing sites of the 'City of Angels'. A GSC sponsored tour may include a visit to Wat Phra Kaow and Wat Pho, a ride down the Chao Phraya on a river boat taxi, or a trip to Suan Lum Night Bazaar. This time in Bangkok gives volunteers the chance to get to know each other, their coordinator, and their new country. The final days of the orientation are spent at the GSC orientation center in the Singburi province about 150 km. north of Bangkok. Here, volunteers are provided training on the science of HIV/AIDS and how to effectively relay this information to young people. Additionally, volunteers are provided basic training in teaching English as a foreign language. Volunteers are also introduced to Thai culture through talks with GSC's local staff, Thai language lessons, shopping at the morning market, and an overnight Buddhist Immersion at a local Wat.
Qualifications:
Participants must be at least 18 years of age and have conversational English ability. GSC actively looks for inspired, self motivated, and mature individuals who have the desire and drive to be a part of this important endeavor to help educate the young people of Thailand about the dangers and consequences of HIV and AIDS.
