Central Kenya's Children Home Project with Local Village Out-reach
Kenya
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: All year.
Description:
The home has a staff of less than seven catering for all the 200 children. After the placement, a volunteer could initiate his or her own project and carry out events like painting the home, buying nails and hammers to repair broken furniture, hold counseling sessions, teach drama and dances of his/her own invention or come up with an economic project that could generate the home income for future up keep. Such projects could either be of agricultural or trade in nature. During the day until 4pm the children attend the local primary school. In that time volunteers can help for the return of the children by preparing food or doing general tasks. Then interact with them on return and stay until 8pm when they retire to bed. Also it is possible to visit local villages with David, the social worker to offer support and advice to local families. This can be done while the children take schooling. Volunteers are free to set up counselling programs and be inventive with work and leisure time. Previous volunteers can taken the children and staff on a picnic and played games by the river.
Highlights:
The trip can be perfectly combined with a holiday. For instance, an individual could volunteer at the home for three weeks then take on a holiday safari for a week at a special cost. You could combine this with a second month at a clinic where we have a placement. Volunteers are expected to take part in all duties to help staff in this location. Tasks included washing by hand, sweeping and helping cooking and other jobs that form an essential part of the running of these placements. Potential volunteers must understand this prior to booking. Be ready for a warm welcome!
Qualifications:
Formal qualifications not required but project welcomes teachers and childcare proffesionals or people who can be flexible in work load and be adaptable to varied tasks. If you have special skills in anything we can introduce them as we aim to customise all our placements to the individual.

Typical Volunteer: Matures and professionals. People willing to offer compassion, skills and support. This placement would best suit someone looking for a chance to do some good away from home and cities. It would also suit groups of two to six people with a wish to effect a major and positive change in the lives of truly destitute children with as little as US$ 1000 or less . This amount of money can paint the whole home, its existing furniture and leave enough to provide each and every one of the children an educational text book.
