Opportunities for Volunteer Work in Medical Centers or Clinics
Guatemala
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Description:
* Medical profession: Students in medicine and dentistry can volunteer to carry out the patients' exams, provide diagnostics and administer medicines. We would prefer that those filling these positions speak Spanish, but it is not absolutely necessary as we can provide translators. Medical observation / Health education for the juveniles: For the students with an interest in the fields of health or health education, they can divide their time between the observation of doctors and the teaching in clinics, giving health instruction to children. While the volunteers work as medical observers, they are responsible for writing down the diagnosis and the medicines prescribed in the files of the clinic, as well as in the cards that the patients are to take home. When they work as health educators for the juveniles, they are responsible for teaching or helping the regular teacher with the class. The volunteers should be enthusiastic, friendly, and able to encourage the children during the activities, games and skits, so that the children won't forget what would be a boring class. The volunteers for such a position would require an intermediate level of Spanish. Health education for woman: For the students with an interest or experience in the field of the woman's health, they can collaborate with our directors of the Program for Women. They will help develop our educational services in the clinics and the communities. We need people that speak Spanish with fluency.
Highlights:
The volunteers will learn about the vibrant culture of the Guatemalan Highland in a way that any tourists will never achieve. They will leave filled with inspiration and the desire to improve the lives of others.

Kamalbe Spanish School - Guatemala's Mission Statement: Kamalbe School is a non-profit organization providing its students the opportunity to learn Spanish while immersed in the world of Guatemalan culture. Kamalbe translates to -Spiritual Guide- from Kiche. At Kamalbe Spanish School, students receive one-on-one Spanish instruction from a highly qualified and experienced staff. For a true Guatemalan experience, students have the option of living with, eating with, and becoming an itegral member of a Guatemalan family.
The students will also have the opportunity to support some of the poorest communities in Guatemala through volunteer projects organized by the school. Volunteer projects include teaching English, art, and music in primary schools and educating about health risks in nearby medical clinics. Past volunteers have brought their individual skillset to the Quetzaltenango (Xela) area to better the lives of community members in the rural villages. At Kamalbe Spanish School, all of these opportunities are at the fingertips of our students!
