Description:
Do you want to hang out with shady characters, do-gooders and beauty queens? By becoming a National Tropical Botanical Garden volunteer/intern you will meet fascinating plants while making a substantial contribution to preservation and knowledge of tropical ecosystems. We currently have positions available at our McBryde/Allerton Gardens (on Kauai's sunny South Shore) and up at Limahuli Garden (on Kauai's stunning North Shore). Volunteers will work in one of the following areas: * Nursery (transplanting, repotting, irrigation, fertilization, weed control, pest control, labeling, and record keeping). * Horticultural Support (help maintain of the garden collection through out planting, pruning, pest control, weed control, fertilization, irrigation, and general garden maintenance) * Conservation Support (help maintain restoration ecology areas through out planting, pruning, pest control, weed control, fertilization, irrigation, and general garden maintenance) There is some limited position potential available in Education, Visitors Program, and Herbarium. **** New Volunteer and Reside at the Garden Program -- Available for 2 weeks December 6th - 19th 2009 *** Please Contact us for details on the G.I.V.E.R.S. Highlights:
You will get to work daily with native Hawaiian and Polynesian cultural plants while getting behind the scenes access to some of the most beautiful Gardens in the world.
Qualifications:
* Completion of two years of college (horticulture, botany, education or related field) is preferred * Strong interest in plants coupled with a desire to learn, experience in the horticulture field is desirable * Interest in and appreciation of Polynesian culture * Ability to work in a cooperatively in a team environment as well as on individual tasks * Ability to perform moderately strenuous physical work in an outdoor environment * Excellent interpersonal skills Volunteer is responsible for obtaining housing and transportation or other needs. We are located on the island of KAUAI. The airport code is LIH. Unfortunately, NTBG does not provide transportation or housing for its volunteers at this time.
