Description:
The cities of Pisco, Ica and Chincha Alta in the Ica Region, and San Vicente de Cañete in the Lima Region were most affected. More than 58,000 homes were destroyed. The city of Pisco, which is 260 km (160 mi) southeast of Lima, was about 80% destroyed, and as many as 530 people living there died, with 148 of those deaths happening in a collapsed cathedral in the city's main square. Volunteers in Pisco will help to rebuild schools and houses, this volunteer program is for groups or individuals who are able to work in basic conditions. The labor is hard and the living condition is basic. Please be prepared to live in a destroyed city and do not expect to be in a nice city. Qualifications:
There are no specialized skills. However, volunteers should enjoy being outdoors, have an interest in manual labor and should not be afraid to get dirty. This will be hard, physical work and the living conditions of the placement will be very basic with limited running water and electricity.

What you will get for the program fee:* Food: The program fee covers three daily local meals - breakfast, lunch, and dinner from Monday to Saturday. * Accommodation: Volunteers will stay with a host family in a single or shared room (depending on availability). * Pick up: With Lima city exception pick up from the bus terminal or the airport is included in all other locations. * Support of local coordinator: From the very beginning to the end of the project, Awaiting Angels coordinator will help volunteers by supporting them and regularly visiting them. * Information Packet: Awaiting Angels offers detailed information on issues that will concern volunteers, such as health, safety, and cultural shock. * Orientation: Upon arrival in your location, participants are met at the airport or bus station and taken to the home of their host family. There you will receive an orientation that will familiarize you with the local area, the Peruvian culture, and your program. * Pre paid cell phone: Pisco only. * Certificate of Completion: Upon completion of your respective service project will receive a certificate illustrating your contributed time. * Free Spanish lessons: Arequipa only.
