Kenya
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Departures every month
Description:
Project details: In Kisumu i-to-i work with a number of projects, encompassing children's homes, centres and orphanages, which have been founded with the aim of giving care and support to needy children and providing them with an education. Many of the children who attend the centres or live at the homes come from the slums, where a high number of children have been left with no parents due to the spread of HIV/AIDS. Without structure and guidance it is easy for these young people to fall into petty crime and worse. The projects give the children the chance to have an education, allowing them to continue on to college and university and giving them a much brighter outlook for the future. Why the project needs volunteers: Projects are under-staffed and under-resourced, making it difficult to cope with the sheer number of children in need of help. Volunteers are desperately needed to support the staff running the centres. As English is a national language in Kenya, English teachers are a permanent necessity and by helping in this area you can bring an invaluable skill to the children you work with. What kind of skills you need to go on this type of project: As a volunteer, you will need to show patience and initiative to cope with the sheer volume of children in your classes. Your resources will be limited so you will need to show imagination and creativity to get the most out of your time. Please budget for stationery supplies that you may wish to purchase while in Kenya. It is important to remember that your students will come from difficult backgrounds. Volunteers will therefore need to be patient, caring and understanding and are called upon to act as a role model and companion, possibly helping with counseling on an informal basis. You don't need any specific skills, but if you do have experience in any specific subjects it will be a great advantage. To give you a head start with your teaching you will be provided with an i-to-i online TEFL course which is included in the price of this project.
Highlights:
Your role as a volunteer: Your main role at this project will be to work alongside the staff and teachers at the school to teach English to the children. If you have the confidence you could also get involved in teaching other subjects. Another important role at the project is to provide companionship, care and love for the children in a 'big brother' or 'big sister' role. You may also find yourself reading to the children and engaging them in recreational activities and sports. Where the project is based: The projects are based in the city of Kisumu, 20km away from Kisumu airport. You will be staying in a volunteer house situated 20 minutes walk / 5 minutes drive from the shops in the city. Please book your flight to arrive into Kisumu (airport code KIS) on the advertised arrival date to ensure your airport pickup.
