Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks and 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: November 2008 + many other dates available for bespoke group requests
Description:
Do something different and make a difference with this fantastic ecotourism volunteer travel opportunity! Not only do you get to visit the amazing Galapagos Islands, but you actually get to do conservation work alongside the Park rangers to help counteract the spread of non-indigenous plant species, keep beaches free of the detritus washed ashore which not only looks unsightly but harms marine life, nd preserve this fragile eco-system for future generations. Finally, enjoy some time spent island-hopping, as you get to see some of the amazingly varied habitats and indigenous species, and help at one of the remote islands' schools.
Highlights:
Hop between the various islands which make up this unique archipelago, enjoying once in a lifetime opportunities to get up close and personal with animals which have fascinated naturalists and ecologists since their discovery 200 years ago and which sparked Darwins theory of evolution. Take this opportunity to see the giant tortoise, the marine and land iguana, sea lions, marine turtles, Galapagos penguins, frigate birds, albatross, and various types of booby, as well as many other animal species unique to the islands. And as you will be helping the national parks own staff to remove invading non-native plant species, and clean beaches you wouldn't normally get to visit, you will be guaranteed to have a perspective which a normal tourist would not have! Get to know more about the islands eco system from those who live and work within it every day, interact with islanders helping at one of the remote island's schools, and gain a much deeper understanding of this amazing natural wonder through becoming involved in preserving its future.
Qualifications:
No requirements, specific skills, education or certifications are necessary - just a desire to do something different and make a difference by spending four days working alongside the ecologists and national park rangers of the Galapagos islands, helping to counteract the spread of non-indigenous plant species, and helping at a local remote island school.
