Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: June-August
Description:
Volunteers in the WorldTeach South Africa summer program will have the opportunity to work in a variety of capacities: as teaching assistants in elementary and secondary schools as well as a community college, and as planners and teachers in a local NGO's business education program and computer education program. All sites will be in and around Cape Town. The central objective of our summer project is to provide and support educational initiatives in poor communities in the Noordhoek valley, south of Cape Town. In the past, we have run a computer course during the students' winter school holidays, and have facilitated an experiential course in entrepreneurship. These courses are very popular and attract large numbers of young people from the very poor Masiphumelele township. Volunteers have also spent time assisting at the township library and other small local organizations in the area. For the last five weeks, volunteers will be placed at a number of different locations. Most volunteers will work as classroom assistants in primary and secondary schools in the Ocean View area, while others may help teach at the integrated Simonstown School.
