Description:
Volunteer teachers come to one of the Chinese schools in Yantai as an assistant teacher. Volunteers assist Chinese teachers who are teaching English. The age group for the kindergarten classes is 5 years and below, the age group for the primary school is from 6 to 12 years old, and 13 to 15 for the junior high schools and 16 to 18 years old for the senior high school students. Volunteers will be mainly teaching conversational English in class by choosing their own topics. They may paint pictures and cartoons, do art projects and play sport games. Volunteers may also sing songs in English, study western culture, traditions, customs and discuss any simple topics. There will be one Chinese teacher sent to each class help the volunteer teachers as they teach. Expect the average class size to be about 50 students. In addition to teaching English language, you may also choose to teach science, arts, sports, music in class or outdoors. A teaching assignment for volunteers can be from Monday to Friday, and most of the classes take place in the morning. A few classes may take place in the afternoon. Volunteers are free in the evening and weekends. The teaching loads vary from school to school. The average teaching hours are about 2 to 4 hours per day. Teaching hours vary from school to school, and it could be from 12 hours to 20 hours per week depending upon location of the school and number of students in each school.
Highlights:
Volunteers may choose to learn Taichi, Wushu, Chinese painting, music and medicine in their spare time. There is a small fee for each item for private tutoring service--normally about RMB50 per hour (about $7/hour ). Volunteers may also choose to do local hiking and excursions during their free time, and there are many local places to visit such as Penglai Pavilion, Nanshan Grand Buddha, Mou's Manor, Kunyu Daoist Mountains and Horsing Raising Island, Tashan Park, and Yantai Hill Park.
Qualifications:
- A native speaker of English from Australia, Canada, UK, US, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore and Europe. - 17+ years old at the age of application. - Healthy and has no physical problem. - Enthusiastic and committed. - No formal teaching qualifications required, but you do need a spirit of adventure and a sense of humor! - No special skills or experience is required. - No teaching experience required.
