Description: Hermann Gmeiner Huascar serves to protect and facilitate initial health care, nutrition and education to children under the age of six, through community management, while their families develop the skills to respond to their children's needs.

SOS Children's Villages revolve around the effort to give children who have lost their parents or who are no longer able to live with them a permanent home and a stable environment. The SOS Children's Village family-like structure is formed by four basic principles: mother, brothers and sisters, house and village.

Highlights: Volunteers will help in:
1. Establishing community structures, made up of families participating in the programmes who manage the community homes and centres
2. Strengthening institutional networks for defending children's rights.
3. Aiding women become self-sufficient, while supporting them in the areas of personal development, literacy, information on protection from gender violence, sexual and reproductive health education and, above all, training and integration into the labour market (skills for work, job searches, micro business and micro loans, etc).
4. Supporting families in their goals of attaining more and better care and protection of their children, and the development of "family projects" centres on improving their living conditions.
5. Meeting the daily needs of children, by providing child care for the youngest residents: the infants and toddlers need caring hearts and steady arms to hold and feed them, help them with their first steps, and play to help their socialization.

Qualifications: Volunteers must be patient and be able to cope with kids asking for lots of attention. People that find it difficult to live with few amentiies may have difficulty at this placement.

Cost in US$: $2775 for 8 weeks; $165 for each additional week

Typical Volunteer: We believe everyone can contribute by volunteering. Recent graduates from high school, college or university, professionals taking a career break, recent retirees, individuals or groups who are interested in a change and the chance to enrich their own life and the lives of others. If you are 18 years or older you can apply for any of the placements available. If you are from 16-18 years old you may apply for placements near our Volunteer Abroad Office and Residence, so that we are able to give you more support. Both students and professionals are needed for placements in all our countries.
