Durations of Program: 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Year round; monthly departures

Description: As with every hospital, the mission of Hospital Dos de Mayo is to medically treat those in need of medical care. There is an HIV project here that needs volunteers, as do other areas of the hospital. This hospital, which is located in an economically depressed area of Lima, relies very much upon volunteers because many of the people that come here do not have enough money for treatment. Religion offers many patients support here, but volunteers do not need to be religious to volunteer.

Volunteers will receive training. Tasks include working with patients and assisting local staff to give medical treatment.

The Volunteer Station inside Hospital 2 de Mayo is working by the conduction of Brother Douglas, an American Volunteer that came to PerĂº 25 years ago and works with other volunteers assisting mainly HIV terminal patiences and HIV/Tuberculosis patiences in 2 rooms of the Hospital. They need volunteers to work one to one with patients counselling them and working with the other volunteers in managing the little Health Post with the delivery of basic medicine to these HIV patients.

Highlights: Volunteers will work as part of a team of local and international volunteers in managing the delivery of basic medicine to terminal HIV patients. They will also participate in the counselling of HIV and Tuberculosis-infected patients. Volunteers may also cook and provide food for children in shantytowns and poor neighborhoods.

Qualifications: Volunteers with knowledge of medicine, specialization in HIV and/or Tuberculosis are greatly needed. People that are not easily adaptable to a totally new culture and people that may have problems in taking 2 buses to head the Hospital may have difficulty at this placement. Volunteers will need to be confortable with taking public transportation in a big city as Lima and capable of working in a team with people from other countries.
