Volunteer Work at an Orphanage in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Throughout the year
Description:
Volunteer at an Orphanage in Sri LankaVolunteers in this program work in orphanages assisting children with various activities including games, sports, teaching, hygiene & education. You will also assist the local staff with helping them in administration work wherever possible. You can also get involved in art & craft activities for children and organizing short trips to local destinations with the children. The Orphanages house around 50 children who are in the age group of 1 -12 years. The children, are the ones who are been left alone by their parents (mothers) and some are those whose parents were lost by the disastrous TSUNAMI in 2004 which has effected most of the Sri Lankans who were living beside the coast and coastal areas. Orphans are deprived of many opportunities necessary for their development. Your little help at an orphanage can be of great significance for these children, helping to make their present secure and future promising. Volunteering at an orphanage is a truly fulfilling and enriching experience. On a typical day, volunteers work for around 5-6 hrs in a day in the Orphanage placement. Weekends are free to travel and explore the historic city of Galle. Program Information Program Requirements Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. Project Location The project placement is located in the coastal city of Galle in southern Sri Lanka. Galle is one of the most popular tourist areas of Sri Lanka .It is the main town in the most southerly part of the island. It is one of the best examples of a fortified city built by Europeans in south and Southeast Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and south Asian traditions. Galle fort is a world heritage site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers.
