Coach Sports in Senegal with Projects Abroad
Senegal
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: All Year Round (you set the start and end date)
Description:
The Senegalese are sports-crazy and very proud of their fitness and athleticism. As the heat of the day subsides, the sandy streets of St Louis are turned into make-shift soccer fields, usually with large rocks as goalposts! The national reverence for soccer is shown in the way cars and pedestrians carefully pick their way round these games rather than disrupt the silky skills on show. Soccer-loving volunteers have the opportunity to concentrate solely on soccer during their project, while those wanting a little more variety can choose the multi-sports option. This involves a combination of basketball, athletics and, of course, soccer. The morning will generally be spent training alongside local adult teams, improving your own skills and picking up coaching tips. Then, after a break at midday, you will swap roles and find yourself coaching one of the many local youth teams around St Louis. If you have a thick skin, there is also the opportunity to referee or act as linesman at evening soccer games! There is also the option to coach basketball while abroad in Senegal Coach Sports Abroad: Coach Basketball in Senegal The 2006 World Basketball Championships were not a success for the Senegalese team, and saw them finish in last place. However, the national team is now under the professional management of one of the most prominent and powerful persons in the world of African basketball, Amadou Gallo Fall. With his help and that of our volunteer coaches, basketball in Senegal can hopefully develop and give the country something else to be proud of! Volunteer Basketball Coaching with Projects Abroad Our basketball coaching program in Senegal allows volunteers to coach basketball abroad to children with a range of sports talents. Projects Abroad is based in a number of different schools within St Louis, where basketball is high on the agenda in sports classes. Volunteers coaching basketball in Senegal will work with children from about 8 to 16 years old. Volunteers will sometimes be asked to help out with coaching various sports at schools in and around St Louis or even at local centers for street children and, if after all this you still haven't had enough sports, the impressive Hydrobase beach is often the scene of impromptu soccer and volleyball matches. Your team-mates will undoubtedly also be happy to give you a few tips on Senegalese wrestling and maybe challenge you to a bout or two! Volunteers need to speak some French, although a bit of confidence is more important than fluency; you should expect that the majority of your placement will be conducted in French. The willingness to pass on some conversational English will be greatly appreciated by local people, who are always eager to pick up a few phrases and try new ones out on you. For other volunteer programs in Senegal, we have Care and Community Work, Teach English and Medicine projects available for the participants to choose from.
Highlights:
Saint Louis, where Projects Abroad is based is on the coast in the North of the country, close to the border with Mauritania. Dakar, the capital is about 4 hours journey south down the 600km coastline. Senegal possesses many tropical palm fringed beaches and several national parks including Parc National de Niokolo- Koba where you can view wildlife like hippos, monkeys, chimpanzees, warthog, crocodile and if you're lucky the elusive lion and leopard. In terms of accommodation, all our volunteers in Senegal stay in a home stay which is a great way to get totally immersed in the culture, and practice speaking French too! There will be a community of volunteers there for you to get to know and socialize with. This project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
