Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: December 20, 2008 - January 4, 2009
Description:
The Ranong district coastline was badly hit during the 2004 Tsunami. The Natural park and the Scientific centre linked to it were damaged severely. About 400 volunteers worked in the region in relief projects and stayed active until now. In 2008 we will continue to support the activity of the National park, its Coastal Research Centre and communities in the Tsunami area. The volunteers will contribute to the action of the Research centre through different environmental activities, like cleaning some of the park areas, work in the mangrove zone and participating in the environmental education campaign they operate for the local population and the youth of the area. The volunteers will help to translate a questionnaire and go to the village to collect information for the Research centre. They will also play with the local children at the school or in the village, and teach them some English that way. The group can also teach those adults who are interested some basic English. Free time will be organised by the volunteers with the support of the group leader. The closest city is far but accessible. The group will stay very close to the sea and will have full access to it. The accommodation and the Research centre are on the seacoast in the Ranong district, on the northern coast of the Andaman Sea. The closest towns to the project site are Ranong (45 km) and Kapoe (10 km). There is an extra fee of 6,500 Thai Baht (about $170 US) for participation in this project, intended to support the local host.
