Teach primary school children English and other subjects in Mombasa
Kenya
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: all year
Description:
The beauty of the white sand beaches and hotels are only a short distance from a different world. This placement would best suit those who wish to help destitute children in any way possible. There is teaching to do and a lot of things to fix in this school. It does not get anymore basic than this. If you have something to teach, teach it here. Placements like this are what volunteering is all about. Any help and company that can be given will be appreciated in a big way. Schools like this really are forgotten about and what Inspire Kenya is all about. The academy today has about 30 children in classes one to four. The children are between the ages of three and eleven. They study in pathetically dusty conditions, the building that serves as the school is partly roofless, the toilets door-less and the classrooms' furniture old and dilapidated. Whenever funds allow, the children are fed porridge to enable them concentrate in class because most of the children come from families that earn less than five pence a day (50 cents).
Highlights:
This placement would best suit people who would like to volunteer in some of the poorest locations in Africa. It is also best for people who would like to make donations that would impact positively on another person's life the minute it is unwrapped. Either through a small donation or hands on work. There is so much to do here, the choice is yours! Even without any funds this placement would be great for someone just wanting to teach in a struggling community. It is usually said of Kenya that, "A visit to Kenya without a stop at Mombasa is no visit to Kenya" The city is a wash with activities ranging from swimming to basking on the White sandy beaches. For a memorable swim, a trip to Kisite Marine Park. Imagine taking a swim around a perfectly white sandy island at the middle of nowhere. Mombasa is surrounded with a number animal parks including Tsavo National park that is three hours away. Shimba hills game reserve where some of the biggest elephants in the world are found is also a couple of kilometers away from the city. For nature lovers, there are loads of aquatic flora and fauna, and topography to marvel at. The southern coast of Mombasa is full of lagoons to snorkel in as well as a visit to the Mangrove swamps where you can canoe and spot the crocodiles! In Mombasa the party never stops for the out going people. The placement and accommodation is a short taxi ride to the white sand beaches where you can spend your time off. Mombasa has a thriving shopping center where you will find bars, cafes and banks. (We can add on a Safari when you are in Kenya. You don't have to book in advance if you have not made your mind up.)
