Mombasa orphanage needs volunteers throughout the year

  Kenya
    Mombasa

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: All year

Description: Work at the home will be perfect for anyone with a heart for the needy and wishes to help in any way possible. The children needs are enormous hence whether one is ready to provide them with a shoulder to lean, a pencil or cards to pass time with, it will not go unappreciated.

In this home, floors are mopped by the children, cooking and laundry is also done by the very children who are orphaned and vulnerable.

Some of the children attend nearby primary schools hence a volunteer working in the home can come up with day time and afternoon programs that can include anything ranging from tuition to out door games.

The home is located in the coastal city of Mombasa's Kiembeni Estate. The estate is sandwiched between a slum a middle class estate and a sprawling slum. It is currently home to over 35 children. The children are between the ages of two and 14.

The children have a wide range of needs and each dawn to them is a beginning of a race for survival. If it were not for this home that runs on very thin budget, the children would either be urchins, prostitutes or drug peddlers.

The home's location is about 10 minutes drive from Kenya's renowned white sunny and sandy beaches of Mombasa and all the tourist wealth that it brings. The city is hailed as the cradle of East Africa's civilization and the gateway to some of Kenya's oldest and magnificent tourism sites and sounds. Mombasa is a city endowed with scenes that never leaves the minds of those who have visited it, whether for work or pleasure. The city never sleeps and neither does it stop to throb with beauty, pleasure and sadness the perfect ingredients of a life either well lived or intended to be lived well.

Mombasa orphanage needs volunteers throughout the year

Highlights: This project would best suit an individual or a group of 2 to 18 people wishing to work hard towards uplifting an underprivileged person's life in a place surrounded with both natural and modern beauty. The place would also suit those who wish to experience white sandy beaches under a perfectly hot weather. That taking the project need not to be experienced travellers as the city of Mombasa has excellent social amenities. If you enjoy the company of children and have time and friendship to offer, this could be for you.

The placement and accommodation is a short taxi ride to the white sand beaches where you can spend your time off. Mombasa has a thriving shopping center where you will find bars, cafes and banks. (We can add on a Safari when you are in Kenya. You don't have to book in advance if you have not made your mind up.)

Qualifications: This placement would best suit a person looking to set out on a philanthropic mission laced with a bit of fun and adventure. Working here would be sure to give you a really genuine feeling of contributing to a developing country. Placements like this go beyond what most volunteer firms would dream of offering. This is the real world experience and one a single person armed with some hope, a few dollars and an open mind could change these lives forever.
