Description:
Come coach volleyball in beautiful Bolivia! Ever since Bolivia hosted the South American Nations Volleyball Championship in 2004, volleyball in Bolivia has been thriving. The Federacion Bolivana de Voleibol, like all other South American volleyball organizations, has been steadily developing the game to reduce Brazil's domination of the sport within the continent. Volleyball in Bolivia may not be the number one sport but it is gaining popularity due to its practicality; it is a sport that can be played on any type of court - dirt, sand, grass, wood and tile. If a net is not available, a rope is sufficient to mark where a net would be. After that all you need is a ball, making it incredibly accessible for all to participate in. Not all children want to play soccer, so volleyball provides them with an interesting alternative option. There are now a number of great facilities that can help the next generation of volleyball players in Bolivia. Many things besides just the sport can be taught - discipline, health, teamwork and unity. Both qualified coaches and volunteer coaching has a big part to play in the future of volleyball in Bolivia. Coach Volleyball to Children with Projects Abroad Projects Abroad works with Club Olympic to help coach volleyball to youngsters. The club was started by a group of friends over 40 years ago, as an initiative to offer the youth of Cochabamba an alternative activity. The club began officially six years ago when the land was given to the school by the municipality for 30 years. They have since built six beach volley courts, six indoor courts, training areas, a small track and a gymnasium. The club covers everything: sports coaching and workouts, games between students, games with other sports schools or associations, theoretical classes and community service. Your Role Volunteering Abroad on the Volleyball project in Bolivia Club Olympic needs help with training and maintenance throughout the year. Volunteer coaches will help raise interest among students and show just how international this sport is. Depending on their level of Spanish our volunteer sports coaches may be given an older group on their own, younger children or work with a Bolivian assistant that speaks English. Working hours would be Monday-Friday from 3 pm to 7 pm, working with children between the ages of 5-16. On the weekends there are tournaments, championships and other activities that volunteers are welcome to attend. Our volleyball project in Bolivia can also extend to local schools. Volunteer coaches would be trained first at the club and then sent out to work with the schools.
Highlights:
Landlocked Bolivia is at the heart of South America, squeezed between five other countries. It has Andean Peaks, tropical forests, bustling cities and peaceful traditional communities. A real taste of South America. Bolivia is a wonderful setting for practicing Spanish. You don't need any Spanish for the journalism placement, but if you would like to learn you can take additional courses to have a more meaningful experience. For more advanced speakers, both the journalism and radio broadcast placements give you a chance to make leaps and bounds in your level of comprehension. In addition, this project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
