Work with Disabled People in Bali

  Indonesia
  • Bali:
  • Ubud

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks

Description: Be part of it with i-to-i!
Our goal is to achieve 400yrs of combined volunteering all over the world by the end of 2008.

So far we have achieved 325yrs which when broken down means we achieved the following:

- Over 5500 children cared for on our community projects around the world
- A minimum of 13,000 children and adults taught English in schools and community centres
- Hundreds of animals protected including Turtles, Pandas, Elephants, Monkeys and more
- At least 80 homes and structures built for families and communities in need
- More than 8000 trees planted which are enough trees to offset the CO2 emissions of over 2,000 cars

How about discovering all that Bali has to offer?

Despite its popularity Bali has refused to become a giant holiday resort or the exclusive territory of blear-eyed stopover passengers hitting the beach before their connecting flight. It retains the picture postcard looks to such an extent that many don't bother with the personality of the island, but you should. Ancient temples stand as a testament to traditional architectural skill and religious belief while customary dances and ceremonies often invade the streets. Our partner project on the island works with disabled people and will use your talents through a variety of methods, including formal learning, conversation classes, games, songs and story-telling. We'll include our TEFL certification free for everyone joining the project.

Work with Disabled People in Bali

Highlights: Once a traditional village, Ubud has morphed into a bustling town with a thriving art culture. Various art galleries pepper the streets and you'll find yourself spoilt for choice with a vast array of souvenirs available from cheap replicas to famous works of art. This modern side of Indonesia is perfectly complimented by the traditional dances and ceremonies that take place in the city, giving travellers a real sense of history and allowing them to trace the local culture from its early roots right up until the present day. Further insight into the Indonesian culture can be found in the areas that surround the city where ancient temples stand as a testament of architectural skill and religious belief. As well as providing a unique cultural experience Ubud is also one of the islands most beautiful regions. This incredible experience will be topped off by your work at a project outside of Ubud where you will be teaching English to disabled people from the surrounding villages.

Qualifications: Although past experience working with disabled people is not essential, it would be beneficial. Professions such as physical and occupational therapy and the like would be very welcome. However, the most important requirement is that you are creative and have an affinity with less able people. Volunteers must be able to use their initiative, be motivated, patient, resourceful, imaginative, and willing to join in a wide range of activities.

Although the project funds itself through its art work, this is not sufficient to hire a teacher. Teachers will also find themselves teaching English conversation classes at the local school, helping to build a better awareness and understanding of disabled people there. Volunteers would also be welcome to assist with outings and activities such as swimming where an extra pair of hands is always a great help.
