Volunteer Coordinator for Service-Learning Experience
Mexico
Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: March 8 - August 1
Description:
Los Embajadores is a service-learning immersion experience in Mexico for high school and college youth. Our immersions take place in 3 sites in Tijuana and Vicente Guerrero, Mexico. Participating groups spend one week at one of these sites, living and working within the local community. The Los Embajadores program is based in service, but incorporates 5 components to create a more holistic experience: Service, Simple Living, Community, Spirituality, and Social Justice. Our mission is to create greater global understanding and awareness by building relationships with others. Our Mexico program is coordinated by volunteers, who act as liasions between the participating groups of youth and our Mexican host communities, which means translating, guiding the group to worksites and activities, and educating the group on the community, life, and culture around them. Volunteers are not expected to be experts, but familiarity with Mexican culture or border and immigration issues is helpful. Los Embajadores volunteers should feel competent in leading a faith-based experience that uses Catholic Social teaching to help participants understand their call to respond to social injustices witnessed during their week in Mexico.

Travel to Mexico, room, board, and program-related transportation in Mexico are all covered by organization. Volunteers receive $10 stipend/week. Los Embajadores does not provide medical insurance.

Our volunteers are culturally sensitive individuals who are comfortable working as liaisons between our Mexican host communities and our participating United States and Canadian youth groups and students. A typical volunteer is mature, responsible, enthusiastic about service work, and able to handle a demanding but enriching schedule.
