Ecuador Health and Medical - Children International Medical/Dental Clinics
Ecuador
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: 9-12 weeks, Monthly Departures
Description:
Volunteers at the Medical/Dental clinics are asked to assist the doctors and dentists in their routine check-ups and tasks. Volunteers usually spend at least half of the day working side-by-side with the doctors, weighing patients, doing eye exams, helping to administer medicine and be a support for the children and their families that come to the centers. The other half of the day is often spent helping to archive patient information, and to prepare patient folders and information for the coming day. Volunteers at this clinic recieve excellent practical experience in how a well managed clinic is run, are able to see the daily tasks and the energy involved in administering such a medical center, as well as interact with people who would otherwise never recieve these kinds of services.
Highlights:
Children International is always looking for volunteers to assist the doctors and dentist and make a difference in the childrens' lives that they work with. Because C.I. only accepts as many children as there are sponsors, the center is well funded, but is still in great need of volunteers, providing their time! Volunteers at the medical clinic in the past have helped with English classes after the doctors are finished for the day (2:30pm) and volunteers are also welcome to help out with sexual education workshops for young people on the weekends (often seen as a taboo subject here).
Qualifications:
Volunteers who are specialized in medicine or health will be placed according to their abilities, otherwise volunteers do not need any special training. Volunteers need to be patient and caring individuals who are keen to learn about routine medical work in local clinics. People who have a hard time seeing different medical conditions or dealing with people hands-on my have a hard time at this placement.
