Volunteer Travel with Turtles in Ghana
Ghana
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Visit our website for upcoming start dates.
Description:
Join GVI and assist with turtle conservation in Ghana. On this very important project you will help protect and monitor nesting turtles, participate in educating the local people about the importance of the turtles, and coordinate ecotourism projects which help to generate alternative sources of income for the local community while enabling the turtles and the indigenous people to coexist in a sustainable manner. Ghana has three species of nesting turtle all of which are endangered. Their survival depends on both the immediate efforts of volunteers, and also on working with the locals particularly fisherman, who come into contact with the turtles frequently to develop sustainable practices which will not threaten the turtles. As a volunteer on this project your responsibilities will include patrolling the beach, collecting turtle eggs and releasing hatchlings, assisting with research and education, and developing ecotourism projects. *How this program makes a difference* Fishermen, as well as other members of the local community who come in contact with the turtles, are not aware of the importance of protecting them. It is not uncommon for locals to kill the turtles for their meat or poach the eggs and sell them as a delicacy. This has become such a problem that the Ghana Wildlife Society is concerned that given the current rate of killing the turtles, they will soon be extinct. As a volunteer you will play an extremely important role in the protection of these turtles, and aid in the long term conservation of Ghanas wildlife.
