Ecuador
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Description:
Located in the area with the highest concentration of indigenous population, Azogues is the marketplace and centre of services for a large surrounding population. Located in the southern section of the Andes, it has remains of the Inca invasion that took place in the 15th century. There are opportunities for interns and volunteers in community centers, bilingual education schools (Quechua and Spanish), special education schools and protected areas for the conservation of historical monuments. In this community, education is being implemented at a slow pace. It is within this array of social assistance programs that interns will work. The region receives many visitors because of the local attractions, and the local mentality is very welcoming. In this program, interns will be working in a variety of different aspects. Working with teachers in elementary schools and day care centers, interns will help teachers set up for classes and projects. There will also be tutoring programs to help with teaching English to children. Interns will assist teachers on special projects and field trips and taking an active role in developmental activities for children to take part in.
