Orphanage / Primary school volunteering in south coastal Mombasa area
Kenya
Length of Position: To suit volunteer
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: All year
Description:
The home's needs are as huge as the Indian Ocean that laps the beach almost on its back yard. Once placed at the home, a volunteer could choose to help with any of the day to day chores that include cleaning, cooking, laundry amongst many other things. If interested a volunteer could also teach the children as most of them attend a single primary school. Therefore one can combine the social work with teaching; this would be a suitable program for those who would wish to go the extra mile of increasing the children's knowledge in addition providing a shoulder to lean on. During the day you can attend the primary school to help with teaching in class or helping out on the compound in general. This project would best suit an individual or a group of 2 to 18 people wishing to work hard towards uplifting an underprivileged person's life in a place surrounded with both natural and modern beauty. The place would also suit those who wish to experience white sandy beaches under a perfectly hot weather. That taking the project need not to be experienced travellers as the city of Mombasa has excellent social amenities. The Orphanage is located about 500 meters away from Kenya's coastal city of Mombasa. The orphanage is home to 50 children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The home is also linked with a small primary school. Making this a joint teaching and orphanage placement. Many of the orphans attend the adjoined school.
Highlights:
It is usually said of Kenya that, "A visit to Kenya without a stop at Mombasa is no visit to Kenya." The city is awash with activities ranging from a swimming to basking on the White sandy beaches. For a memorable swim, a trip to Kisite Marine Park would make Kenya a person's favorite get away destination. Imagine taking a swim on a perfectly white sandy island at the middle of nowhere. Mombasa is surrounded with a number animal parks including Tsavo National park that is three hours away. Shimba hills game reserve where some of the biggest elephants in the world are found is also a couple of kilometers away from the city. For nature lovers, there are loads of aquatic flora and fauna, and topography to marvel at. The southern coast of Mombasa is full of lagoons to snorkel in as well as a visit to the Mangrove swamps where you can canoe and spot the crocodiles! In Mombasa the party never stops for the out going people. (We can add on a Safari when you are in Kenya. You don't have to book in advance if you have not made your mind up.)
Qualifications:
You dont need specific qualifications for this. Just good English and communication skills. A will to be flexible and a desire to help those who don't have the chances we did as kids.
