Teach in Primary School in Mombasa Town (Tirana Brookview School)
Kenya
Dates: Our dates are set to suit the volunteer althought schools close in April, August and December in Kenya.
Description:
Located close to the beaches and shopping facilities of tropical Mombasa volunteers can take on a range of self customised projects within this school. Spilt over 5 floors it provides education for almost 240 pupils ages from nursery to 15 years old. So volunteers can choose the type and age group which they would like to interact with. Going to teach in Kenya is a wonderful thing to do. All of the primary schools are under funded and have very little in material items to help teach the children. Many pupils have text books that are old and often the children share pencils too. Education at primary level is free in Kenya although the parents have to fund the books, pens and a school uniform. Many parents cannot even afford that. So often the children will be wearing old uniform that has been passed down the generations. Most of the schools also have a lack of teachers and almost every day children sit in class without teachers just learning what they can from the books provided. To make up the numbers the headmaster will employ what is called parent paid help. That is local parents who are not government registered to teach but come in just to help with the study and bridge the gap of missing teachers. All of the pupils have to bring in some money each month to pay the headmaster so he can then in turn pay the teachers. Often the pupils cannot afford that and the teachers often are unreliable because they know they may not get the agreed amounts. This puts another strain on the education. Volunteering your services in school has a great effect on many people. Firstly you can help fill empty classes and teach children with whatever subject you feel you can conduct. The other benefit of volunteering is that when we have volunteers at a school the children's attendance gets better and also the grades of the children go up which mean that the school has a better standing in the local community. The parents then don't mind paying the school fees because they have heard white people are teaching in the school. A great, welcoming school where you can really engage whatever skills you have to help these children. Also with the mass of coral reefs, marine parks, Game reserves, waterfalls, white sand beaches all on your doorstep, this is more than just a volunteer trip. We ready for a warm welcome.
Highlights:
This program would best suit teachers and students from all walks and strips of the profession. It would also suit groups of either students or professionals who would like to help out while on holiday as Inspire Kenya can make special arrangements for one to help out in the morning and take on excursions or have fun at the perfectly white sand beaches of the city in the afternoon. As for those would not like to loose their comfort while helping out at the school, Inspire can book them on at a partner hotel a stones throw away from the school.
Qualifications:
Like all the schools under Inspire Kenya's programs, one needs not to be a teacher to get something that would have an immediate and lasting positive impact on the children and the community at large going. Other than teaching, volunteers are welcome to get innovative and initiate or revive programs like that of feeding. One can also volunteer to give the school a face lift by painting it, buying nails and a bit timber to repair broken furniture with the help of a local carpenter who are unbelievably cheap to hire. The school welcomes anyone with something to teach or offer.
