Vietnam

Description:
Be part of it with i-to-i! Our goal is to achieve 400yrs of combined volunteering all over the world by the end of 2008. So far we have achieved 325yrs which when broken down means we achieved the following: - Over 5500 children cared for on our community projects around the world - A minimum of 13,000 children and adults taught English in schools and community centres - Hundreds of animals protected including Turtles, Pandas, Elephants, Monkeys and more - At least 80 homes and structures built for families and communities in need - More than 8000 trees planted which are enough trees to offset the CO2 emissions of over 2,000 cars Do you want to work with children keen to learn? Nowhere sums up modern Vietnam better than the city of Hanoi; bursting with a rich cultural history expressed through temples and colonial architecture yet entirely at home with the modern world of espressos and internet cafes. The contrast produces one of the most captivating cities in Asia and you'll never tire of exploring it. Our partner project is similarly deserving of your attention as we work with several state primary schools throughout Hanoi which offer English skills to eager young pupils, some of whom have special needs. The schools are usually quite large so you'll have your hands full, but fear not, we'll include our TEFL course when you book to help you make the biggest possible impact. But in some cases you may lead your own class. Find out more about i-to-i, watch their short video here: http://video.i-to-i.com/site-videos/video.html
Highlights:
What were the highlights of your trip that you couldn't wait to tell your friends about? "How beautiful the children were and how much I feel in love with Hanoi. Some of the funny things that happened when I was teaching. Like when I caught one of the little girls giving her classmate a haircut. I immediately said in English "Stop!" Of course, she had no idea what I was trying to say, so she continued on her haircutting mission. Thank goodness for using hand signals and knowing how to say no in Vietnamese, the little boy's fringe was saved! Just. When I would speak to the class in the very little amount of Vietnamese that I learned. They would roar with laughter and roll around at their desks. It was so much fun to see 50 odd beautiful smiling faces looking at you." (Katie Kelly) The schools are located in various districts of Hanoi, within walking distance or a bus ride away from your accommodation. Hanoi is a pleasant city with a European feel, and you will find many attractive lakes, parks and boulevards to explore. Hanoi is less polluted and noisy than Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's largest city, and is home to many interesting museums, temples and pagodas. You will be staying in a guest house in the lively Old Quarter of Hanoi, where you will have easy access to internet cafes, banks and shops. You will need to fly into Hanoi on the advertised arrival date.
